Civic engagement. It’s a term that’s been tossed around a lot lately and is gaining a lot of attention in local communities. But, what is it?

Definition of Civic Engagement

Civic engagement is about improving communities at the local level. It’s about bringing people together to solve issues to improve a community. The New York Times published a great piece on civic engagement. The article, “The Definition of Civic Engagement,” quotes Civic Responsibility and Higher Education, edited by Thomas Ehrlich, published by Oryx Press, 2000, which defines civic engagement in the following way:

“Civic engagement means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through both political and non-political processes.”
